Őrség National Park

Őrség National Park is a protected area in western Hungary that conserves a mosaic of meadows, hayfields, orchards and mixed forests typical of the region. The park preserves traditional rural landscapes and vernacular villages that are examples of long-standing small-scale agricultural land use.

A network of rural lanes and marked walking and cycling routes links small villages, folk museums, lookout points and nature trails. Visitors often explore thatched-roof houses, local crafts and low-intensity woodlands rather than large developed visitor centres.

The present landscape is the result of centuries of local farming, grazing and haymaking rather than a single construction event; villages and field patterns evolved organically over time. Small community museums and preserved farmsteads document local building styles and rural life.

The park sits in western Hungary around the border area of Vas and Zala counties, in a low-hill landscape of fields and woodland with dispersed villages such as Őriszentpéter forming local service centres. The area lies near the borders with Austria and Slovenia.
