Orongo
Archaeological Site Rapa Nui ceremonial village with birdman petroglyphs
Ceremonial village on Easter Island’s Rano Kau crater rim, Orongo contains stone houses, petroglyphs and platforms used in the birdman cult; tourists combine archaeological visits with cliff-top views toward Motu Nui.
Orongo is a ceremonial stone village on the rim of the Rano Kau volcanic crater on Easter Island (Rapa Nui), Chile, and forms part of Rapa Nui National Park and its UNESCO World Heritage inscription (1995).
The site contains a compact plaza and dozens of low, stone-built houses and platforms arranged along the crater rim, plus extensive carved petroglyph panels depicting birdman figures and other symbols. The cliff-edge location provides direct views to the sea and nearby islets that featured in the island’s birdman (Tangata manu) rituals. Archaeological signage and a small interpretation area explain the village layout and carved motifs.
Orongo is best known as the center of the Tangata manu ritual and ceremony that dominated parts of the island’s social and religious life in the late pre-contact period. The stone village and its art reflect specialized ritual use rather than ordinary domestic settlement.
The village sits on the southwestern rim of Rano Kau at the edge of Easter Island, on steep sea cliffs facing several offshore islets. It is reached by road from the island’s principal settlements and lies within the protected area of Rapa Nui National Park.
- Park access: Entry to the site is managed as part of Rapa Nui National Park, which requires a park ticket for access and guided visits are available for those who want archaeological context.
- Best viewpoint: Orongo overlooks the small islets used in the Tangata manu competition; the village's plaza and rim offer the clearest views toward Motu Nui and the sea cliffs.
What to See #
- Stone houses: Cluster of low stone dwellings and platforms arranged along the western rim of the Rano Kau volcanic crater, many with carved petroglyph panels and doorways adapted to the sloping terrain.
- Petroglyph panels: Panels and rock faces bearing carved birdman (Tangata manu) figures and other motifs linked to the island's ritual competition; several panels are concentrated around the village plaza.
- Crater-rim viewpoint: High cliff-edge viewpoint overlooking the sea and the small offshore islets including Motu Nui; the plaza and rim provide the main panoramic outlooks used in photographic views of the site.
