Orava Castle

Orava Castle is a hilltop medieval castle in northern Slovakia, located above the Orava River near the village of Oravský Podzámok. It is one of Slovakia’s best-preserved castles and stands on a basalt rock prominence overlooking the valley.

The complex combines medieval defensive structures with later Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque modifications resulting from successive rebuildings and additions between the 13th and 17th centuries. The castle now functions as a museum with furnished rooms, historical exhibits and a visitor route through the main courtyards and halls.

Historically the site originated as a stone stronghold in the 13th century on earlier fortifications; ownership and architecture evolved over centuries as noble families expanded and rebuilt the complex. In the 20th century the castle became a managed museum and cultural site and has been conserved for tourism and study.

Geographically it sits in the Žilina Region of northern Slovakia above the Orava reservoir and is accessible by road from nearby towns and regional centres.
