The islet served as a launch pad for several early private orbital attempts, including Falcon 1 launches conducted from 2006 through 2009. There are no visitor facilities and access is restricted because the atoll is used for missile and rocket testing.

Historically the island is one of many reef islets that make up Kwajalein Atoll; it has no permanent settlements and has been maintained in a largely undeveloped state. Its contemporary significance comes from its occasional use for aerospace operations rather than tourism.
