How to Get to Olympia, Greece

Olympia (Ancient Olympia) is best reached by road from nearby regional airports or by intercity KTEL buses from larger cities. The nearest airports with regular connections are Athens (ATH) and Kalamata (KLX); from there you continue by bus, taxi or rental car to the archaeological site.

By Air

Athens International Airport (ATH): From ATH you can reach Olympia by taking a KTEL long-distance bus from Athens Kifisos Bus Station to Pyrgos (typical fare ~€20-€25, journey ~4-4.5 hours) and then a short taxi or local bus from Pyrgos to Ancient Olympia (taxi ~€15-€25, ~25-35 minutes). Alternatively rent a car at ATH (drive ~3.5-4 hours) if you prefer flexibility.

Kalamata International Airport (KLX): KLX is closer to Olympia; from Kalamata there are KTEL regional buses (some routes run via Pyrgos) or taxis. Typical bus fares are ~€10-€15 and journey times are ~1.5-2 hours; a taxi or private transfer is faster (~1-1.5 hours) but costs more (expect ~€60-€90).

By Train & Bus

Bus: The most practical public option is KTEL intercity buses. Buses to Pyrgos or directly to Ancient Olympia depart from major hubs (Athens Kifisos bus station, Kalamata). Athens→Pyrgos runs ~€20-€25 and takes ~4-4.5 hours; Kalamata→Olympia ~€10-€15 and ~1.5-2 hours. From Pyrgos a short local bus or taxi completes the trip.

Train: There is no direct national rail service to Olympia; the Greek rail network does not serve the site. If using rail you would travel by train to a nearby city (e.g., train to Patras or to Pyrgos where available) and then continue by bus or taxi - in practice buses are the primary public option for reaching Olympia.
