Shaoxing is situated in the northern part of Zhejiang Province and boasts a long and detailed history. As with many other towns and cities in this province, it dates back thousands of years.
A number of famous scholars lived here including Yu the Great, in ancient times, and Lu Xun in modern times. Many of these famous literary artists were drawn to the town because of its peacefulness. It is fairly understated in comparison to other cities in the region and while there are not a lot of manmade attractions for tourists there is beautiful countryside, ancient ruins and traditional buildings.
A highlight of a trip to Shaoxing is the cuisine. The town is famous for its fresh and organic produce which ensures that all of the dishes made here have their own unique freshness and taste. There are many local restaurants to choose from, most of which cater to the locals.
