Old Town of Cáceres

The Old Town of Cáceres is a remarkably intact medieval centre in Extremadura, western Spain, combining Roman, Moorish, Gothic and Renaissance architecture within a single walled ensemble. The core dates from the medieval period with later palatial additions.

Visitors encounter a compact network of streets and squares lined by towers, palaces and churches; many civic and noble residences retain original façades and courtyards. The Plaza Mayor and adjacent palatial streets form the primary focus for walking tours and close-range study of the layered architecture.

Cáceres grew on earlier Roman and Islamic foundations and became a fortified medieval town; between the 14th and 16th centuries wealthy nobles built palaces and renovated fortifications, creating the dense mixture of styles present today. The town’s walls and towers have been conserved and integrated into later urban life.

Cáceres stands in western Spain’s Extremadura region, roughly 300 kilometres west of Madrid and serving as the provincial capital; the old town occupies a compact plateau above the surrounding plain.
