Old City of Dubrovnik is a fortified medieval city on the Adriatic coast in southern Croatia, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding preservation and architecture. The core is a compact walled enclosure famous for its intact defensive system and Renaissance and Baroque palaces.

The historic centre features nearly 2 kilometres of defensive walls with towers and forts, the paved main street known as the Stradun (about 300 metres long), and numerous palaces, churches and public buildings clustered within a roughly rectangular area. Walkways along the walls provide panoramic views over the sea and the terracotta roofs of the Old City.

Construction and modification of the walls and major buildings occurred across the Middle Ages and Renaissance as the maritime Republic of Ragusa grew; the urban fabric visible today reflects centuries of repairs, reconstructions and civic building campaigns. The Old City has been continuously inhabited and adapted, including significant reconstruction after the 1667 earthquake and restoration work in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The Old City sits on a promontory on the Adriatic Sea at the southern tip of Dalmatia, immediately adjacent to the modern city of Dubrovnik. It faces open sea to the west and is surrounded by steep streets rising from the harbour and nearby residential neighbourhoods.

  • Walls timing: Walks on the city walls require a timed ticket and are best visited early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and midday heat.
  • Accessibility: Many central streets are pedestrian-only and the Old City is compact enough to be explored on foot; steep steps and uneven paving are common.

What to See #

  • City Walls: A near-continuous defensive circuit around the Old City extending roughly 2 kilometres and reaching heights of up to 25 metres in places, with walkways offering panoramic views of the Adriatic and the city's rooftops.
  • Stradun (Placa): The pedestrian main street that runs east-west through the Old City, paved in limestone and lined with shops, cafes and historic palaces; it is approximately 300 metres long.
  • Rector's Palace: A Gothic-Renaissance palace that housed the seat of the city government and archives of the former Republic; it contains decorative rooms and civic architecture dating from the 15th and 16th centuries.
  • Fort Lovrijenac: A freestanding fortress on a rocky outcrop just outside the western walls that provides sea views and played a key role in the city's maritime defence.
