Old Cathedral of Coimbra

The Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Sé Velha) is a Romanesque cathedral in Coimbra, Portugal, dating from the 12th century and historically the city’s main cathedral. It is noted for its solid, fortress-like exterior and Romanesque architectural character.

The cathedral presents a compact, barrel-vaulted nave and a sculpted Romanesque west portal; visitors commonly also see the adjacent cloister and the interior spaces that display medieval stonework. The building is a major historic monument in Coimbra’s old town and is frequently visited alongside the university precinct.

Construction began in the 12th century after the Christian reconquest of the region; the cathedral remained Coimbra’s principal church for several centuries and later coexisted with newer ecclesiastical buildings. Over time it has undergone repairs and alterations but retains its Romanesque core.
