Park Large urban park and cultural venue in Santiago
Large urban park in Santiago featuring concert grounds and the Fantasilandia amusement park. Visitors attend concerts and festivals, use bike paths and picnic areas, and access open city green space.
A major urban park in central Santiago named for independence leader Bernardo O’Higgins, occupying a large area on the city’s southern edge. It combines formal lawns, tree-lined avenues and event spaces and is one of Santiago’s principal public parks.
Extensive green spaces, walking paths, playgrounds and a lake area provide recreation for families and city residents; park pathways connect to surrounding neighbourhoods and public transport stops. The park contains several built facilities used for events and indoor entertainment.
The park was established during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as part of municipal efforts to create civic green space and has expanded and been restructured several times since then. Over time it has hosted fairs, national celebrations and large public gatherings.
Situated in the Santiago Metropolitan Region immediately south of the city centre, within easy reach of central neighbourhoods and public transit, set on flat urban terrain among dense residential and institutional districts.
- Visiting tip: Best time to visit is late afternoon for tree-shaded promenades and to avoid the midday sun in summer.
- Events: Large open spaces are used for fairs and national celebrations, so parts of the park may be closed during major events.
