Odeon of Pericles
Archaeological Site Ancient Athenian theatre building commissioned by Pericles
In Athens’s ancient precincts the Odeon of Pericles survives as archaeological ruins; visitors add it to Acropolis and Agora walks to study classical architecture and ancient performance spaces.
The Odeon of Pericles is an ancient roofed theatre on the southwest slope of the Acropolis in Athens, built in the classical period under the leadership of Pericles. It served as a performance space for music, contests and civic events.
The structure was a relatively small, covered auditorium distinct from the open-air theatres of Athens and was used for musical contests and gatherings associated with civic festivals. Its form combined a seating area with a stage building and a protective roof structure.
The Odeon was constructed as part of Periclean building programmes that reshaped the Acropolis precinct during the 5th century BCE and was adapted or rebuilt in later periods. Archaeological remains mark its location near other classical monuments.
The Odeon sits below the Acropolis rock, above the Theatre of Dionysus and within the archaeological complex of central Athens, a short walk from the Acropolis Museum and other ancient sites.
- Acropolis setting: Located on the southwest slope of the Acropolis plateau and close to the Theatre of Dionysus, making it part of the Athenian festival and performance landscape.
