Main image

Oceanogràfic is a large modern aquarium in Valencia, Spain, located within the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències (City of Arts and Sciences) cultural complex. Opened in 2003, it presents multiple marine habitats and public displays designed for education and research.

The facility groups species by environment in a series of pavilions representing the Mediterranean, tropical seas, temperate oceans and polar environments, and features an underwater tunnel and outdoor dolphin pool. The complex is designed for staged visits with timed entries and interpretive exhibits.

The project was designed by architects associated with the City of Arts and Sciences masterplan and opened to the public in 2003; since then it has been a major cultural and tourist attraction for Valencia. The aquarium supports conservation and educational programmes alongside public exhibitions.

Oceanogràfic occupies a site in the eastern part of Valencia’s modern riverbed redevelopment, adjacent to other attractions of the arts and sciences complex and within easy reach of the city centre by public transport.

  • Opening and scale: Opened in 2003 as part of the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències complex and commonly described as the largest aquarium in Europe. Guided tours and timed entries are used to manage visitor flows.
  • Visiting tip: Combine a visit with other nearby attractions in the arts and sciences complex; early morning or late afternoon visits reduce peak crowds.
