Numantia
Monument Ruined Celtiberian town in Spain, famed for resistance
Archaeological remains near Garray recall Numantia’s Celtiberian resistance and Roman sieges; visitors explore earthworks, ruins and a small museum to understand Iron Age fortifications and Spain’s ancient military history.
Numantia is an archaeological hilltop site in north-central Spain near Soria, famous for its role in the Celtiberian resistance to Roman conquest. It is best known for the prolonged Roman siege that ended in the early 2nd century BC.
Numantia was inhabited by Celtiberian peoples and became notable during the 2nd century BC for resisting Roman armies; the Romans finally captured and destroyed the settlement after a long siege in 133 BC. Subsequent archaeological investigation has exposed occupation layers showing pre-Roman and Roman-period activity.
Located in the province of Soria in Castile and León, the site sits on a hill above the Duero river basin, roughly 10-15 kilometres from the nearest towns and about 200 kilometres north of Madrid.
- Archaeological importance: The archaeological site illustrates Iron Age and Roman-period habitation and resistance in the Iberian interior and is important for understanding Celtiberian culture.
