Monument Warsaw's only prewar synagogue still in use
Warsaw’s Nozyk Synagogue, built in the early 20th century, remains the city’s main functioning prewar synagogue. Visitors attend services, learn about Jewish Warsaw and examine the restored interior.
Nozyk Synagogue is an early 20th century synagogue in central Warsaw that remains an active place of worship and one of the city’s principal Jewish community buildings. It is the only prewar synagogue in Warsaw that survived the war intact and returned to use.
The synagogue building features a prayer hall and community spaces used for services, commemorations and cultural events. It is modest in scale compared with major European synagogues but is important for Warsaw’s postwar Jewish community.
Constructed in the early 20th century, the building survived wartime damage and periods of alternate use; it was restored and returned to religious and community functions after the war. The synagogue has been maintained by the local Jewish community since the late 20th century.
The Nozyk Synagogue sits on Twarda Street in Warsaw’s city centre, within the Śródmieście district, and is close to central public transport links.
