How to Get to Nova Zagora#
Nova Zagora is an inland Bulgarian town on the main Sofia-Burgas railway corridor, so trains from Burgas and Stara Zagora are the simplest public-transport option. Burgas Airport is the closest airport; from there most travellers continue by coach or BDZ train.
Burgas Airport (BOJ): Burgas is the nearest international airport to Nova Zagora (about 70-90 km southeast). From BOJ you can take a bus or taxi to Burgas Central Bus Station (15-30 min, ~6-12 BGN by bus) and then a train or intercity coach to Nova Zagora (train 1-1.5 h, typical BDZ fare ~3-8 BGN; coach similar duration and price).
Sofia Airport (SOF): Sofia is further (about 240-270 km); flights here are an option when coming from western Europe. From SOF take a bus or train to Sofia Central Station (30-40 min, ~1.60-4.00 BGN by public transfer), then a BDZ train toward Burgas/Stara Zagora that stops at Nova Zagora (total rail time ~3.5-4.5 h; fares from Sofia commonly 15-30 BGN depending on train type).
Train: Nova Zagora has a railway station on the Sofia-Burgas line (BDZ). Regional and intercity trains stop here; journey times: Burgas ~1-1.5 h, Stara Zagora ~30-45 min, Sofia ~3.5-4.5 h. Ticket prices are modest (regional trains typically 3-10 BGN).
Bus: Intercity coaches link Nova Zagora with Burgas, Sliven and Stara Zagora; buses depart from the town’s bus stop and from Burgas/Stara Zagora bus stations. Coach fares are comparable to rail and schedules can be slightly more frequent for some routes.
How to Get Around Nova Zagora#

- Train (BDZ) (3-15 BGN) - The town’s station lies on the Sofia-Burgas line; regional and intercity trains provide the most comfortable and predictable connections. Trains to Burgas and Stara Zagora are frequent; buy tickets at the station or on BDZ’s website for intercity services.
- Intercity / regional bus (3-12 BGN) - Private and state-run buses serve routes to nearby centres (Burgas, Sliven, Stara Zagora). Buses can be quicker than some regional trains for specific links; timetables vary by operator so check local departure boards.
- Local buses and minibuses (1-3 BGN) - Local buses and marshrutkas cover the town and nearby villages; they are low-cost and useful for short trips, though schedules can be informal and vehicles are often cash-only.
- Taxi / ride-hailing (Short rides 5-20 BGN) - Taxis are plentiful and reasonable for short trips or early/late connections; confirm the meter or a fixed price before starting. Ride-hailing apps are less widespread than in large cities but local taxi firms are reliable.
- Car hire / driving (Rental from ~50-80 BGN/day) - Renting a car gives the most flexibility to explore surrounding agricultural areas and smaller villages. Roads are generally good on main routes but expect narrower surfaces on rural spurs.
