Why Visit Northern Cyprus #

Kyrenia’s crescent harbour is the postcard image: fishing boats, waterfront cafés and a medieval harbour castle housing a shipwreck museum. Bellapais Abbey sits on the hillside above and makes an easy half-day detour for tea and panoramic views. It’s the most relaxed, photogenic town in the north.

Climb to St. Hilarion, Buffavento and Kantara for dramatic ruins on cliff ridges once held by crusaders. Each castle has a different character-St. Hilarion’s fairy-tale towers, Kantara’s sheer drops-and the views over the Kyrenia range and Mediterranean are the real payoff. These sites explain how strategic the island was.

Walk the Greek-Roman ruins at Salamis and explore the walled city of Famagusta for its Gothic churches turned mosques, like Selimiye (the old cathedral). The fenced-off Varosha quarter is controversial and best observed from safe vantage points rather than trespassing; the juxtaposition of ancient ruins and recent history is striking.

The Karpaz Peninsula is where you’ll find long, empty golden beaches, the Apostolos Andreas monastery and roaming wild donkeys. It’s true low-density travel-bring supplies and expect simple guesthouses. If you want quiet beaches and a sense of remoteness, this is the place to go.

Food is a highlight: grills of fresh seafood, hot halloumi straight from local dairies and generous meze spreads in family-run restaurants. Try fish mezes in Kyrenia and village taverns in the interior; portions are honest and unpretentious. Dining here is about convivial plates and simple, well-cooked ingredients.

Who's Northern Cyprus For?

Couples

Bellapais Abbey and the Kyrenia harbour create a peaceful romantic combo: stone cloisters, seaside dinners and sunset strolls along the old port make for intimate evenings.

Families

Golden Beach on the Karpaz Peninsula offers long sandy shores ideal for kids, while shallow bays near Kyrenia provide calm swimming and short, accessible day trips.

Backpackers

Budget infrastructure is basic and hostels are limited; independent travelers rely on cheap pensions in Kyrenia and Famagusta while exploring historic ruins and coastal trails.

Digital Nomads

Kyrenia and Lefkoşa have cafés with reliable Wi‑Fi and lower rents than many Mediterranean cities. Coworking is emerging, but expect fewer networked communities than bigger hubs.

Foodies

Halloumi, mezze plates and hearty kebabs are staples-hunt down seaside fish taverns in Kyrenia and traditional meyhane for genuine Turkish-Cypriot flavors.

Adventure Seekers

Hiking the Kyrenia mountain ridges and exploring the ruined Salamis archaeology near Famagusta reward active travelers; coastal cliffs and hidden coves offer kayaking opportunities.

Party Animals

Nightlife concentrates in Kyrenia’s harbor bars and a handful of beach clubs; it’s fun and convivial but rarely matches larger party islands in scale or late-night excess.

Nature Buffs

The Karpaz Peninsula’s wild beaches, sea turtle nesting and populations of feral donkeys are special. Quiet coastal reserves suit birdwatching and slow nature exploration.

Regions of Northern Cyprus #

Kyrenia Coast

If you picture sunlit Mediterranean harbours and castle-backed promenades, that’s the Kyrenia coast. Narrow streets, seafood restaurants and a compact marina make Kyrenia an easy, atmospheric base. Venture into the nearby hills to visit Bellapais Abbey and small mountain villages tucked into the Beşparmak (Five Finger) range.

Top Spots

  • Kyrenia Castle - Medieval fortress overlooking the harbour with sea views and historical exhibits.
  • Bellapais - A hillside village famed for its ruined abbey and sweeping views of the coast.

Famagusta

Famagusta mixes archaeological riches with a strangely frozen modern story. Wander the ruins of Salamis and the old city walls, then feel the eerie pull of Varosha’s boarded hotels. It’s a place where antiquity and recent history sit side by side, excellent for curious walkers and photographers.

Top Spots
  • Famagusta (Gazimağusa) - Ancient city walls and baroque churches give way to lively cafés and seafront ruins.
  • Salamis Ruins - Extensive Greco-Roman ruins just outside the modern city, impressive for history lovers.
  • Varosha - The abandoned resort quarter that looms as a haunting, photogenic curiosity.

Nicosia North

Nicosia’s northern quarter is compact, atmospheric and soaked in layered history-Ottoman architecture, narrow souks and lively tea houses. It’s the best place to feel everyday life away from the beaches and to browse crafts, small museums and restored hans. Walking here rewards those who enjoy city textures and slow discovery.

Top Spots
  • North Nicosia (Lefkoşa) - The island’s divided capital with bazaars, Ottoman inns and narrow lanes to explore.
  • Büyük Han - A restored caravanserai-turned-cultural hub where artisans and cafés gather.
  • Ledra Street - The pedestrian spine near the buffer zone, full of shops and cafés.

Karpaz Peninsula

The Karpaz is Northern Cyprus’s answer to a last-untainted shoreline: broad sandy beaches, scrubby headlands and tiny villages with minimal tourism. This is where you come for slow drives, empty bays and rudimentary guesthouses rather than resort infrastructure. Bring patience and a sense of adventure to appreciate its quiet coastal wilderness.

Top Spots
  • Karpaz Peninsula - Wild, undeveloped coastline where golden sands meet ancient headlands and sparse villages.
  • Dipkarpaz (Rizokarpaso) - A sleepy village that’s a gateway to remote beaches and traditional life.
  • Golden Beach - Long, empty sands famed for their sense of remoteness and sea turtle sightings.

Kyrenia Mountains

Rising behind the Kyrenia coast, the Beşparmak (Five Finger) mountains offer a cooler, greener counterpoint to the shoreline. Castle ruins like St. Hilarion cling to ridges with dramatic views, while quiet villages and forestry drives make for pleasant day trips. The terrain is ideal for short hikes and scenic photography.

Top Spots
  • St. Hilarion Castle - Perched ruins with one of the island’s finest panoramic viewpoints.
  • Five Finger Mountains - Rugged ridgelines offering scenic drives and short hikes above the coast.
  • Mountain Villages - Small settlements offering homely tavernas and quiet walking routes.

Getting to & Around Northern Cyprus #

Northern Cyprus is most commonly reached via Ercan Airport (ECN) with frequent connections through Turkish hubs (Istanbul). Many visitors fly into Larnaca (LCA) in the Republic of Cyprus and cross the Green Line into the north by road; Larnaca is about 30-45 minutes from central Nicosia, depending on traffic. Direct sea services to Turkish ports operate seasonally but air links via Turkey are the dominant gateway.

Transport in Northern Cyprus is shaped by its political status: most international air links run through Turkey, and crossing between north and south involves official checkpoints with passport control. Distances are short and roads are compact, so private vehicles and minibuses dominate local travel rather than rail or long‑distance coaches.

  • Air travel - The main airport serving Northern Cyprus is Ercan (ECN), which has regular flights to and from Turkish hubs (Istanbul IST/SAW) operated by carriers such as Turkish Airlines and Pegasus. International traffic is largely routed via Turkey; alternative access is via Larnaca (LCA) in the south followed by a land crossing.
  • Rental Car & driving - Rentals are widely used to reach resorts and archaeological sites - drives are short (Kyrenia ~30-40 minutes from Ercan; Famagusta ~60-90 minutes). Roads are generally good; however, speed limits and signage follow Turkish practice and some rural roads can be narrow.
  • Buses & shared minibuses - Intercity buses and shared minibuses (dolmuş‑style) link major towns such as Nicosia, Kyrenia and Famagusta with frequent services on main routes. Timetables can be informal outside summer months, so check departure points locally.
  • Border crossings - Crossing the UN Green Line between north and south is common for visitors arriving in the Republic of Cyprus; checkpoints such as Ledra Street and Ayios Dhometios in Nicosia are official crossing points - carry your passport and expect simple identity checks.

Where to Stay in Northern Cyprus #

Northern Cyprus mixes resort hotels along the Mediterranean with small guesthouses and holiday rentals in Kyrenia (Girne), Famagusta (Gazimağusa) and Nicosia’s north. Seasonal peak is summer and public-holiday weekends; booking ahead is wise for coastal towns.

Hotels & Resorts
€50-160 / night, budget to upscale

Kyrenia’s harbourfront and the Bafra/Girne coast host the largest resort complexes and all-inclusive hotels. Best for beach holidays and organised excursions; many resorts operate on seasonal schedules so check open dates outside summer.

Vacation Rentals
€35-120 / night, mid-range

Girne old town, Esentepe and Famagusta offer private apartments and villas popular with families and longer stays. Self-catering rentals provide flexibility and can be good value outside peak weeks.

Guesthouses & B&Bs
€25-70 / night, budget to mid-range

Lefkoşa (North Nicosia), Bellapais and Kyrenia have small family-run guesthouses that suit cultural sightseeing and off-season visits. Hosts are often multilingual and provide local guidance on dining and transport.

Boutique Hotels & Converted Mansions
€60-140 / night, mid-range to boutique

Kyrenia’s old harbour and Bellapais contain boutique hotels in restored stone houses, good for couples seeking quieter stays with character. Rooms tend to be fewer and fill quickly during festivals.

Beach Resorts & Seafront Apartments
€40-130 / night, mid-range

Long beaches near Famagusta and the Karpas Peninsula feature small beach hotels and apartment blocks aimed at sun-and-sea travelers. Choose east-coast properties for quieter beaches and more traditional village ambience.
