North Stradbroke Island
Island Large Queensland sand island, beaches and biodiversity
A large sand island off Queensland near Brisbane, known for long beaches, surf breaks, whale-watching seasons and Aboriginal Quandamooka heritage. Visitors camp, surf, fish and explore walking tracks and freshwater lakes.
North Stradbroke Island is a large sand island off the coast of Queensland, Australia, in Moreton Bay. The island covers approximately 275 square kilometres and is known both for its long beaches and for its Indigenous significance to the Quandamooka people.
Beachside attractions and coastal headlands are the primary draws - surf beaches and ocean cliffs at places like Point Lookout, long sandy beaches that run for several kilometres, and freshwater dune lakes such as Brown Lake. The island also supports small townships that provide ferry access and visitor services.
The island is the traditional land of the Quandamooka people, and European-era sand mining operated on parts of the island for many decades before mining activities were phased out in recent years. Tourism, fishing and conservation are now major uses of the island.
North Stradbroke Island sits in Moreton Bay, roughly 30 to 40 kilometres southeast of Brisbane’s central business district and is reached by vehicle and passenger ferries to the township of Dunwich.
- Minjerribah: Recognised by the local Quandamooka people as Minjerribah; the island is part of their traditional lands and cultural heritage.
- Whale watching season: Whale watching season runs roughly from May to November when migrating humpback whales are most commonly seen from coastal lookouts.
What to See #
- Dunwich: The island's main township and ferry terminal, offering basic services, accommodations and the primary connection to the mainland by vehicle and passenger ferry.
- Point Lookout: A headland at the island's northeast tip known for ocean-facing cliffs, popular surf breaks and a lookout point used for whale watching during the migration season.
- Brown Lake: A naturally coloured perched freshwater lake formed over sand and peat; a popular spot for swimming and short walks near the island's southern interior.
How to Get to North Stradbroke Island #
North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) is reached by ferry from the Redland City/Cleveland area east of Brisbane. From Brisbane CBD drive to Cleveland (around 30-40 km depending on route) and take the vehicle barge or passenger ferry from Toondah Harbour/Point at Cleveland across to Dunwich on North Stradbroke Island. The Dunwich ferry terminal is a short walk into the township; once on the island, sealed and unsealed island roads connect the settlements, beaches and vehicle access points.
Tips for Visiting North Stradbroke Island #
- Aim for sunrise at Point Lookout for calmer seas and the best chance to spot dolphins and turtles close to shore; headland lookouts are productive before beaches fill up.
- Use the scheduled passenger or vehicle ferry to Dunwich rather than informal boat options; if you plan to drive on beaches check for required permits and tide times because some beaches are tidal and can be hazardous.
- Combine visits to North Gorge and Cylinder Beach at Point Lookout for varied coastal views and surf access-many day visitors only go to Main Beach and miss these headland vantage points.
- Respect temporary signage for nesting shorebirds and marine life closures, especially during breeding season-some visitors overlook these protections and disturb sensitive areas.
