Normanby Island is one of the larger islands in Papua New Guinea’s Milne Bay Province and is part of the D’Entrecasteaux Islands group. The island is known for traditional villages, coastal reefs and dive sites frequented by visitors based in Milne Bay.

The island contains small coastal settlements and a tropical, largely forested interior; reefs and marine habitats around the island support snorkeling and scuba diving. A handful of small guesthouses and dive operators on nearby islands provide access for visitors.

Normanby Island was inhabited by Melanesian communities for centuries and remains home to local villages with customary land ownership and traditional livelihoods. European contact and colonial administration affected the region from the 19th century onward, and the island has been part of Papua New Guinea since independence in 1975.

The island sits off the southeastern tip of Papua New Guinea in Milne Bay Province, southeast of the provincial capital Alotau and within the D’Entrecasteaux archipelago.
