Nördlingen
Area Medieval town built inside a meteorite crater
Nördlingen sits inside the Ries meteorite crater and retains a medieval ring wall; visitors walk the town wall, climb St. Georg’s tower for views and study local geology at small museums.
Nördlingen is a well-preserved medieval town in Bavaria set within the circular Nördlinger Ries impact crater, a geological structure formed about 14.8 million years ago. The town retains a largely intact defensive wall and a compact historic centre built in local impact-derived stone.
The historic centre features narrow streets, timber-framed and stone buildings, and several civic landmarks. Key visitor experiences include walking the complete town wall of about 2.7 kilometers and climbing the 90 meter bell tower of St. Georg’s Church for panoramic views across the crater.
Nördlingen grew through the Middle Ages as a market and craft town; the stone used in many buildings comes from local deposits associated with the Ries impact. The town’s fortifications and civic layout date mainly to the 14th and 15th centuries, and a modern museum explains the meteorite impact origin of the basin.
Geographically Nördlingen sits in the Donau-Ries district of Bavaria, roughly in the middle of southern Germany. The circular Ries basin around the town is about 24 kilometers in diameter and the town is accessible by regional rail and road from larger cities such as Augsburg and Nuremberg.
- Tower view: Climbing the tower of St. Georg's Church rewards visitors with a clear view across the circular Ries crater and the town's stone roofs on good days.
- Wall circuit: The town wall walk is one of the few in Germany that remains complete and allows a continuous circuit roughly 2.7 kilometers long, commonly accessed from several gates.
What to See #
- St. Georg's Church (Daniel): A Romanesque-Gothic parish church whose bell tower, called the "Daniel", is a dominant 90 meter landmark offering panoramic views of the surrounding Ries crater when open to the public.
- City wall and walkway: A largely intact medieval defensive circuit that encircles the old town with a walkway roughly 2.7 kilometers long, providing continuous views over rooftops and the town's concentric street plan.
- Rieskrater-Museum: A local museum that explains the origin and geology of the Ries impact structure, along with archaeological finds from the area and exhibits on meteorite science.

Tips for Visiting Nördlingen #
- Climb the town's main church tower, the "Daniel" of St. Georg, for the best panoramic view over the circular Ries crater - the tower is the single best vantage point for appreciating Nördlingen's geology.
- Walk the intact city wall (Stadtmauer) - entry points are well marked around the ring and the full circuit gives different views of the town and crater; start from the market square near St. Georg to combine wall walking with a visit to the centre.
- Visit the Rieskrater Museum in town - many visitors overlook its clear explanations and exhibits about the meteorite impact that created the crater, which put Nördlingen's setting into context.
