Noirmoutier

Noirmoutier is an island off the Atlantic coast of western France in the Pays de la Loire region, linked to the mainland by both a bridge and a tidal causeway. The island is notable for its maritime landscape of beaches, salt marshes and small harbours.

Its low-lying interior contains traditional salt pans where sea salt is produced, and the island’s settlements include a fortified château in the main port town. Popular activities include beachgoing, cycling on coastal tracks, and visiting the salt marshes and local markets.

Historically the island has long been connected with salt production and maritime trade; its fortified town grew around a medieval castle that guarded the harbour. Over time it has developed into a year-round community with a strong seasonal tourism trade.

Noirmoutier lies off the Vendée coast and is reached from the mainland via a bridge and the tidal Passage du Gois. The surrounding landscape is flat and coastal, with beaches on the ocean side and sheltered inlets to the north.
