How to Get to Niterói#

Niterói is most commonly reached from Rio de Janeiro’s airports (Galeão-GIG and Santos Dumont-SDU) and by ferry across Guanabara Bay from central Rio (Praça XV). There is no direct commuter rail into Niterói - most visitors arrive by ferry, intercity bus, taxi/ride-hailing or by car across the Ponte Rio-Niterói.

By Air

Rio de Janeiro-Galeão-Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG): Galeão is the larger international airport serving the Rio de Janeiro region; to reach Niterói you can take a taxi or ride-hailing service across the Ponte Rio-Niterói (typical Uber/taxi ~R$60-R$130, 25-50 minutes depending on traffic). There are also airport shuttles and municipal/regional buses that connect to Rio city terminals; from there take a ferry or local bus to Niterói (combined transfer 40-90 minutes, fares vary).

Santos Dumont Airport (SDU): Santos Dumont sits close to central Rio (downtown). From SDU the fastest public option is a short taxi/ride-hail to Praça XV (10-20 min, ~R$15-R$40) and then the barca (ferry) across Guanabara Bay to Niterói (see ferry fares below). Direct taxi/ride-hail trips from SDU to central Niterói across the bridge typically take 30-60 minutes and cost roughly R$45-R$100.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no commuter rail line that goes directly into central Niterói. The nearest heavy-rail hub is Central do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro (SuperVia); from Central do Brasil you generally transfer onward by bus or ferry to reach Niterói. Train+transfer journeys typically take 40-90 minutes depending on connections; SuperVia fares and schedules should be checked on the operator site.

Bus: Intermunicipal and municipal buses link Niterói with Rio (including lines that run across the Ponte Rio-Niterói) and with other towns in the state. Buses from Rio’s Novo Rio bus station and from various point-to-point routes reach Niterói’s bus terminals (Rodoviária de Niterói and local stops); typical bus travel times across the bridge are 30-70 minutes and fares for intermunicipal/urban buses are commonly in the ~R$4-R$12 range depending on route and operator.

How to Get Around Niterói#

Niterói is easiest to navigate with a mix of ferry crossings, buses and ride-hailing - the ferry plus short local buses or walks work best for most visitors. If you’re short on time or travelling late, use a taxi or Uber; for leisurely exploration stick to ferries, buses and walking in central neighbourhoods.

  • Ferry (Barca) (R$6-R$8) - Fast, frequent and often the most pleasant way to get between central Rio (Praça XV) and central Niterói (Arariboia/Charitas area). Ferries take about 15-25 minutes for the crossing and are convenient for tourists and commuters; they also avoid bridge traffic. Expect busy times at morning and evening peaks and always check the departure terminal in Rio (Praça XV) before you travel.
  • Buses (urban & intermunicipal) (R$4-R$12) - Niterói’s bus network covers neighbourhoods across the city and connects to Rio across the bridge. Urban buses are the cheapest way to get around but can be slow in rush hour; intermunicipal buses across the bridge are frequent from Rio and take roughly 30-70 minutes depending on traffic. Buy tickets on board with a contactless card or cash where accepted and ask the driver or conductor about route termini if you’re unsure.
  • Taxis & Ride-hailing (Uber, 99) (R$10-R$150) - Taxis and app-based ride-hailing are widely used and are the most practical option late at night or if you have luggage. Ride-hailing is typically cheaper than meter taxis for longer trips; expect fares within the city to be modest but trips across the bridge to and from Rio can rise with distance and traffic. Watch surge pricing during peak hours and Carnival/Festivals.
  • Driving & car hire (R$20-R$200 (daily hire; bridge tolls vary)) - Driving gives flexibility to explore beaches and the Serra da Tiririca area; parking in popular spots (Icaraí, São Francisco) can be tight at weekends. Trips across the Ponte Rio-Niterói are straightforward but subject to heavy congestion at peak times; check real-time traffic and be aware of any tolls on the route. Car hire is available in Rio and at Galeão - renting in Rio and driving over the bridge is common for day trips to Niterói.
  • Walking - Central neighbourhoods such as Icaraí and the waterfront around Praça Arariboia are very walkable and pleasant for exploring beaches, cafés and the municipal museum. Walking is the best way to soak up the local atmosphere, but distances between some attractions and beaches can be large, so combine walking with bus/ferry/taxi for longer hops.

Nightlife in Niterói#
