Nisyros
Island Greek volcanic island with central caldera and hot springs
A small Dodecanese island with a smoking caldera, Nisyros draws hikers to its Stefanos crater, whitewashed villages, and local tavernas serving fresh seafood and Greek meze.
Nisyros is a small volcanic island in the Dodecanese archipelago of the South Aegean, Greece, notable for its large central caldera and ongoing hydrothermal activity. The island’s volcanic features make it a distinctive geological destination in the Aegean.
A primary highlight is the island’s large crater complex - the Stefanos caldera - where visitors can walk near fumaroles and steaming vents. Small port villages such as Mandraki provide access and basic services, while hillside settlements like Nikia offer viewpoints over the caldera and surrounding sea.
The island is the product of volcanic activity; the visible caldera and fumarolic fields were formed by successive eruptions and collapse events. Volcanic activity has been recorded in historical times and the island retains active hydrothermal features rather than frequent high-energy eruptions.
Geographically, Nisyros lies in the southern Aegean Sea among the Dodecanese islands, close to Kos and other isles, and is reached by ferry from neighboring islands. The landscape combines rocky volcanic interior, steep caldera walls, and low-lying coastal settlements.
- Transport: Ferry services connect the island with Kos and other Dodecanese islands, with schedules varying seasonally.
- Safety: The volcanic crater area features active fumaroles and warm ground; visitors should follow marked paths and local safety guidance.
What to See #
- Stefanos crater: A large volcanic crater with steam vents and fumaroles at the island's interior, accessible on foot from nearby villages and one of the island's main visitor attractions.
- Mandraki: The island's main port and administrative settlement, offering ferry connections, small shops, and boat access to coastal sites.
- Nikia: A traditional hillside village known for whitewashed houses and views over the caldera and the Aegean Sea.
How to Get to Nisyros #
Most visitors reach Nisyros via Kos. Fly to Kos International Airport (KGS) or arrive by ferry to Kos town, then take a local ferry to Nisyros (the island’s port is Mandraki). Ferries run mainly in the high season and schedules vary; crossings from Kos typically take on the order of one to a few hours depending on route and stops.
On landing at Mandraki the village and main sights are a short walk uphill from the harbour (typically 10-20 minutes depending on exact destination). Check seasonal ferry timetables in advance.
Tips for Visiting Nisyros #
- Take the regular ferry from Kos (the most common gateway) and plan to arrive early in the day-ferry schedules are weather-dependent and early arrivals give you time to reach the caldera and villages before crowds.
- Head uphill from the port village of Mandraki toward the villages of Nikia and Emporios for the best panoramic views of the volcanic caldera; many visitors stay near the port and miss these village viewpoints.
- If you plan to approach the Stefanos crater, check local guidance on volcanic-gas conditions and consider hiring a local guide-access and safety conditions can change, and guides know the safe viewing spots.
Best Time to Visit Nisyros #
