Ningaloo Coast
Cape World Heritage marine coastline with fringing coral reef
World Heritage coastline in Western Australia where coral reef lies close to shore; tourists snorkel, dive, and join seasonal whale‑shark swims, or visit Cape Range gorges and beaches.
The Ningaloo Coast is a protected marine and coastal World Heritage area on the northwest coast of Western Australia, inscribed in 2011 and centred on the fringing Ningaloo Reef. The reef runs for roughly 260 kilometres along the coastline and is notable for its close proximity to land.
Extensive fringing coral accessible from shore, seasonal aggregations of whale sharks and diverse marine life that support snorkeling, diving and wildlife tours. Cape Range National Park provides terrestrial scenery, canyons and lookouts immediately inland, and the town of Exmouth is the primary gateway for visitor services.
The Ningaloo Coast was recognised for its outstanding biodiversity and the nearshore fringing reef ecosystem when it received World Heritage status in 2011. Zoning and management measures combine marine park protections with tourism and research to limit impacts on sensitive habitats.
Geographically the Ningaloo Coast lies off the northwestern shore of Western Australia, adjacent to Cape Range National Park and accessed from Exmouth and smaller coastal settlements. The area is remote by Australian standards and best reached by road from regional centres or by small-air services to Exmouth.
- Whale shark season: Seasonal whale shark aggregations are a major draw, with sightings most common between March and August; operators offer regulated swim tours from Exmouth.
- Shore access to reef: Large sections of the reef lie very close to shore, allowing snorkeling from beaches and easy shore access to fringing coral systems.
What to See #
- Cape Range National Park: A rugged limestone range with canyons, gorges and lookouts that sits immediately inland from the reef and forms the terrestrial component of the World Heritage property.
- Ningaloo Marine Park: The protected marine waters fringing the coast that include the coral reef, lagoons and seagrass beds and are managed for biodiversity and sustainable use.
- Exmouth: The main service town for visitors to the reef and national park, offering accommodations, dive operators and whale shark tour operators.
- Muiron Islands: A small group of islands off the Ningaloo coast noted for seabird colonies and marine wildlife, located north of Exmouth.
