Nîmes Cathedral

The Cathédrale Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Castor de Nîmes is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Nîmes in southern France and the seat of the Diocese of Nîmes. Its fabric includes a Romanesque core with later Gothic and post-medieval modifications.

The building occupies a prominent site in the historic centre and is located within a few hundred metres of major Roman monuments such as the Maison Carrée and the Roman arena. The interior contains the primary nave and choir spaces used for regular liturgical services and visible architectural layers from different periods. Visitors typically view the exterior façades and the cathedral as part of a walk through Nîmes’ Roman and medieval quarter.

A church has occupied the site since the early medieval period; the present cathedral structure dates mainly from the 11th and 12th centuries with subsequent Gothic and later alterations. It has been the episcopal seat for the local bishopric since the medieval era and has been adapted and restored over centuries to serve liturgical and civic functions.
