How to Get to Ngerulmud#
Ngerulmud (the national capital) and nearby Melekeok are reached via Palau’s international airport (ROR) with onward road transfers from Koror; Palau has no rail network and inter-island travel is by boat or charter where required. Renting a car or prearranging transfers is the normal way to reach government offices in Ngerulmud.
Roman Tmetuchl International Airport (ROR): The main international airport for Palau, located on Babeldaob near Airai; it is the primary entry point for Koror and Palau’s states including Melekeok and Ngerulmud. From ROR to Koror town the drive over the causeway is about 10-20 minutes; taxis and rental cars are available.
No other international gateways: ROR is Palau’s principal international airport; there are no regular international alternatives for reaching Ngerulmud or Melekeok.
Train: There is no rail network in Palau.
Bus / Road: Melekeok and Ngerulmud are on Babeldaob and reachable by road from Koror via the Babeldaob causeway and island roads; travel times are roughly 30-60 minutes by car from Koror depending on exact origin and traffic. Public bus services are limited; most visitors use taxis, rental cars or organised transfers.
How to Get Around Ngerulmud#
Palau’s hubs - ROR and Koror - are connected by short road transfers; for government business in Ngerulmud expect a car taxi or prearranged transfer from Koror. Inter-island travel is limited and usually requires booking boats or charters in advance.
- Airport (ROR) to Koror ($5-$15 (taxi typical)) - Roman Tmetuchl International Airport is the arrival point; the drive to Koror town over the causeway takes about 10-20 minutes. Taxis and rental cars meet most flights and are straightforward for immediate transfers.
- Car / Rental ($50-$120/day (typical rental)) - Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore Palau’s Babeldaob and Koror areas, including the route to Melekeok and Ngerulmud. Road distances are short but services and fuel availability should be checked in advance.
- Taxi / Shared Van ($3-$20 (short to medium trips)) - Local taxis and shared vans operate between Koror, Airai and destinations on Babeldaob; they’re useful for point-to-point travel when you prefer not to drive. Availability can be limited outside peak tourist season.
- Boat / Inter-island Charter (Varies widely (prebook)) - For outer islands (including Peleliu and Sonsorol states) travel is by boat or occasional charter flights - services are infrequent and should be booked in advance. Ferry/charter timings and prices vary widely, so confirm arrangements ahead of travel.
- Walking - Koror’s main town areas and local attractions are walkable; however, attractions across Babeldaob and other islands require motor transport or boats.
