Newgrange
Tomb Neolithic passage tomb older than Egyptian pyramids
In the Boyne Valley, Newgrange is a Neolithic passage tomb older than the pyramids, noted for carved kerbstones and a winter-solstice light alignment; guided tours explain its archaeology and chamber art.
Newgrange is a large Neolithic passage tomb in County Meath, constructed around 3200 BC and forming part of the Brú na Bóinne UNESCO World Heritage complex. It is one of the best-preserved passage tombs in Europe and is noted for its precise solar alignment.
A narrow passage leads into a central cruciform chamber; on the winter solstice sunrise a narrow beam of sunlight penetrates the entrance and lights the chamber floor for a short period. The mound is encircled by engraved kerbstones decorated with spirals and other Neolithic motifs.
Built in the late Neolithic, the site predates both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids and demonstrates sophisticated ritual and architectural planning. Archaeological investigation and conservation over the 20th century have stabilised the structure and enabled guided public access.
Located on the north bank of the River Boyne in County Meath, Newgrange sits within the Boyne Valley complex of prehistoric monuments and is served by a visitor centre that manages timed entry and tours.
- Age and significance: The monument was built around 3200 BC, making it older than the Egyptian pyramids and part of the Brú na Bóinne complex recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Visitor access and solstice: Access to the inner chamber is by guided tour only and winter solstice access is tightly limited and allocated by lottery due to the chamber's special sunrise illumination.
What to See #
- Passage tomb and central chamber: The central passage tomb with its long entrance passage leading to a cruciform chamber, aligned to admit direct sunlight at the winter solstice sunrise.
- Kerbstones and megalithic art: Decorated kerbstones and megalithic art panels around the mound, with carved spirals, lozenges and radials dating to the Neolithic period.
How to Get to Newgrange #
Newgrange (Brú na Bóinne) is served via the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Donore, County Meath. From Dublin allow around 40-50 minutes by car (roughly 40-50 km) to the visitor centre; there is an on‑site car park.
Visits to the monument itself are run as guided tours from the visitor centre - the centre provides a short guided shuttle/minibus transfer or walk to the tomb as part of the tour. Many guided day tours and coaches also depart Dublin.
Tips for Visiting Newgrange #
- Access to Newgrange is only via the Brú na Bóinne visitor centre in Donore on guided, timed tours - book well in advance, especially in high season, because slots fill quickly.
- Take the earliest tour of the day when possible; morning tours tend to be quieter and give a less rushed experience in the passage tomb chamber and exhibition.
- If your interest is broader, check availability and pre-book tours for Knowth and Dowth too - those neighbouring monuments have limited tour capacity and are easily missed by visitors focused only on Newgrange.
Best Time to Visit Newgrange #
Best visited in spring or autumn for milder weather and smaller tour groups; winter solstice access is extremely limited.
