Air New Zealand is a full-service carrier from a traveler’s perspective, generally positioned as New Zealand’s flag carrier with a strong reputation for a customer-focused onboard product and distinctive in-flight offerings. The airline operates a dense domestic and regional network within New Zealand and the Pacific, plus long-haul services connecting New Zealand to markets in North America, Asia and Europe. As a member of Star Alliance, it offers codeshares and reciprocal benefits with alliance partners to broaden international connectivity.

Airpoints - Air New Zealand's Frequent Flyer Program

Airpoints is Air New Zealand’s frequent-flyer program; members earn Airpoints Dollars on eligible flights and with participating partners, and those Airpoints Dollars can be used toward flights, upgrades and other travel purchases. Status Points (separate from Airpoints Dollars) are used to track progress toward elite benefits such as priority boarding, additional baggage allowances and lounge access; the program also works with Star Alliance partners and other travel partners for earning and redemption. For travelers who fly Air New Zealand regularly or want to redeem directly on the airline, crediting flights to Airpoints is generally worthwhile.

Where Air New Zealand Flies

Air New Zealand is based primarily at Auckland (AKL) and operates an extensive domestic network across New Zealand with significant operations from Christchurch (CHC) and Wellington (WLG) as well. The airline serves trans-Tasman routes to Australia and a range of Pacific Island services, and it also operates long-haul services connecting New Zealand with North America, parts of Asia and Europe. Star Alliance membership and codeshare partnerships extend the airline’s global reach beyond its own scheduled routes.

Tips for Flying Air New Zealand

  • Check fare inclusions carefully because baggage and seat selection allowances vary by fare and route, especially on short domestic and trans-Tasman flights.
  • Use the Air New Zealand mobile app or online check-in to manage bookings and get boarding passes before arrival at the airport.
  • If you want the Skycouch (a row of economy seats that converts into a couch) book and pay for it in advance as availability is limited to certain aircraft and rows.
  • Confirm lounge access rules for Koru Lounges before travel since access is normally tied to business-class tickets, eligible status or a paid lounge pass.
