New Ireland is a long, narrow island in northeastern Papua New Guinea and is the principal island of New Ireland Province. It is part of the broader Bismarck Archipelago and is known for its coastal reefs and island communities.

The island is noted for coral reef diving, wreck dives near the provincial capital and distinctive traditional carving and ceremonial art often referred to as Malagan. Beaches, reef channels and village cultural activities draw visitors interested in marine recreation and local traditions.

European contact and colonial administration altered the island’s external links, and the area saw military activity during the Second World War; remnants of this history remain around some coastal areas. The island’s communities continue to practice customary arts and fishing-based economies.

Geographically the island lies off the northeast coast of New Guinea; the town of Kavieng sits at the northern end and serves as the main settlement and access point for the island and nearby islets.

  • Transport hub: Kavieng has the island's main airport and regular boat connections to nearby islands and dive sites.

What to See #

  • Kavieng: The provincial capital and main transport hub located at the northern tip of the island; serves as the gateway for diving, snorkelling and access to offshore islands.

How to Get to New Ireland (island) #

New Ireland Island’s main hub is Kavieng at the northern tip. The island is served by domestic flights (PNG Air and others) from Port Moresby and other PNG centres into Kavieng Airport, and by inter-island boat services to Kavieng port. Once on New Ireland a single coastal road links the main settlements; taxis and small buses (PMVs) operate around Kavieng and along the coast.

Tips for Visiting New Ireland (island) #

  • Fly into Kavieng (the island's main air hub) if you need reliable connections-many diving and cultural trips base out of Kavieng and arrange local boat transfers from there.
  • Arrange boat charters and guides in advance for diving wrecks, village visits and remote beaches-services and fuel are limited on New Ireland, so last-minute logistics can be difficult.
  • Hire a local guide to visit traditional malagan sites and inland villages; cultural protocols and access vary by community, and a local escort will help you see things that independent visitors often miss.
