New Castle of Manzanares el Real

The New Castle of Manzanares el Real is a late medieval stone castle in the town of Manzanares el Real in the Community of Madrid. It dates to the 15th century and is associated with the noble Mendoza family; it is noted for its well-preserved defensive architecture and residential spaces.

The castle features a rectangular plan with a pronounced central keep and corner towers, a fortified curtain and an inner courtyard that organized both defensive and domestic activities. Visitors explore ramparts, the courtyard and rooms restored to illustrate noble residence in late medieval Castile.

Built in the 15th century by local nobility, the castle replaced earlier fortifications and served both as a defensive stronghold and as a noble residence. Over the centuries it has been restored and adapted for museum use and cultural programming.

The fortress sits at the northern edge of the Madrid region at the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama, adjacent to the Santillana reservoir and the small town of Manzanares el Real; it lies roughly fifty kilometres north of central Madrid by road.
