The Neue Wache is a small neoclassical guardhouse on Unter den Linden in central Berlin, designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and completed in the early 19th century as a military guard building.
The building is now used as Germany’s central memorial to the victims of war and tyranny and houses a single sculptural work as a central focal point. Its austere interior and classical portico make it a conspicuous civic monument on a major Berlin boulevard.
Originally constructed in 1816-1818, the building has been repurposed several times and was designated in 1993 as the federal memorial with a new central sculpture installed at that time.
It stands on Unter den Linden in central Berlin, close to the Brandenburg Gate and other government buildings.

How to Get to Neue Wache #
Neue Wache stands on Unter den Linden near Bebelplatz in central Berlin. It’s a short walk (around 3-8 minutes) from the U‑Bahn/U‑station Unter den Linden (U5) and from the S‑Bahn/tourist hub at Brandenburger Tor; multiple bus lines also serve the Unter den Linden corridor.
From major rail hubs such as Berlin Hauptbahnhof or Alexanderplatz, take S‑ or U‑bahn toward the Mitte area and walk a few minutes along Unter den Linden to reach the memorial.
Tips for Visiting Neue Wache #
- Visit Neue Wache early in the morning or later in the evening to experience the memorial in a quieter, more reflective atmosphere - midday sees the largest flow of tourists from Unter den Linden.
- It's free to enter and the central display (Käthe Kollwitz's sculpture) is centrally placed - take time to stand in the middle and absorb the scale and quiet, as many visitors only walk past the building.
- Approach from Unter den Linden and allow a few extra minutes to view the exterior reliefs and the architectural symmetry that are easy to miss when crowds cluster at the entrance.
