Nesactium
Archaeological Site Ancient fortified Illyrian-Roman archaeological site in Istria
An archaeological site in Istria County, Nesactium preserves Roman and pre-Roman ruins - walls, foundations and a small museum - attracting history walkers exploring Croatia’s Histrian coast.
Nesactium is the archaeological remains of an ancient fortified settlement in Istria, Croatia, associated with the pre-Roman Histri tribe. It is a significant regional site for the study of Iron Age and early Roman-period settlement in Istria.
Ruins at the site include visible sections of fortification and building foundations that reflect its role as an inhabited hilltop settlement. The location preserves traces of the urban layout and defensive structures used by the Histri.
Nesactium served as a local centre before coming under Roman control; historical sources and archaeology record its destruction during Roman expansion in the 2nd century BCE, with Roman influence established thereafter. Excavations have documented material culture from both the native settlement and the Roman period.
The site lies in southern Istria, within present-day Istria County of Croatia, near small modern villages in the coastal interior of the peninsula.
