NEMO (museum)

NEMO is a large interactive science museum and discovery centre on the Oosterdok waterfront of Amsterdam, designed as a five-level, ship-like building. The current building opened in the late 20th century and is one of the Netherlands’ best-known hands-on science centres.

Exhibition floors are organised by theme and emphasise tactile, experimental displays aimed at children and families, with demonstrations, workshops and temporary shows. The rooftop terrace provides panoramic views over Amsterdam’s historic centre and is accessible without visiting all the exhibits.

The present NEMO building was completed in 1997 and designed by Renzo Piano; since opening it has specialised in science education and public engagement. The centre hosts school programmes and rotating exhibitions that change several times per year.

Situated on the waterfront directly north of Amsterdam Centraal Station, the museum is within a short walking distance of the city’s main transport hub and other central attractions.
