Neapolis
Museum Ancient Greek archaeological site in Sicily
Syracuse’s Neapolis archaeological park contains a Hellenistic Greek theatre, Roman remains and the quarry-known ‘Ear of Dionysius’ cave. Visitors walk layered ruins to see classical stagecraft and excavated urban infrastructure.
Neapolis refers to the archaeological district of Syracuse on Sicily’s eastern coast, containing major Greek and Roman monuments set in an open-air park. The area preserves well-known remains from Classical antiquity and later periods.
Key monuments include the large Greek theatre carved into the hillside, Roman civic remains and the nearby limestone quarries and cave features that were used in antiquity. The Greek theatre dates to the classical and Hellenistic periods and remains a primary draw because of its scale and acoustic properties.
Other notable features within the park include rock-cut passages, an artificial cave historically called the Ear of Dionysius and Roman-era structures that show Syracuse’s long urban and civic history. Interpretive paths link the major monuments and allow visitors to move between Hellenistic and Roman remains.
Syracuse was a major Greek city-state in antiquity; the Neapolis area developed in the 5th through 3rd centuries BC and was later reworked under Roman rule. The archaeological record in the park reflects centuries of civic, military and quarrying activity.
The archaeological park sits within the modern city of Syracuse on Sicily’s southeast coast, a short distance from the city center and approximately an hour’s drive south of Catania.
- Greek theatre scale: The Greek theatre of Syracuse is one of the largest surviving Greek theatres and is a focal point of the archaeological park.
- Ticketing note: A combined ticket typically covers the main monuments in the Neapolis archaeological park; check site opening times as hours vary seasonally.

Tips for Visiting Neapolis #
- Neapolis Archaeological Park in Syracuse is hottest and busiest midday-visit at opening or late afternoon to avoid heat and cruise-ship crowds that often arrive mid-morning.
- Give yourself plenty of time to see the site's highlights: the Greek Theatre, the Roman amphitheatre and the Latomie (quarries) that include the Ear of Dionysius-the Latomie area is easy to miss but worth descending into for the acoustics and views.
- Pick up tickets and a site map at the park ticket office on arrival and plan your route so you don't backtrack between the dispersed monuments.
