Nazi Party rally grounds
Historical Site Former Nazi rally grounds in Nuremberg, historical site
Nuremberg’s Nazi Party rally grounds include Zeppelin Field and the Documentation Center; visitors study Third Reich architecture, propaganda and wartime history through exhibitions and guided interpretation.
Nazi Party Rally Grounds (Reichsparteitagsgelände) in Nuremberg are the complex of parade grounds and monumental structures used for the Nazi mass rallies of the 1930s. The site includes large-scale constructions from the Nazi period that were designed to host mass events and propaganda displays.
Major surviving structures include the open parade ground known as Zeppelin Field and the enormous, partly unfinished Congress Hall. The complex is now principally preserved as a historical site with exhibition and documentation facilities rather than an event venue.
Construction and large-scale works took place during the 1930s under the Nazi government; architects and officials of the regime planned the grounds as a setting for party rallies through the 1930s. After 1945 the site fell into disuse and parts were later conserved for historical study and public education.
The rally grounds lie in the southeast of Nuremberg near the Dutzendteich area and are accessible from the city; parts of the site are used for exhibitions and guided historical interpretation.
- Context: Site is in Nuremberg and contains large-scale 1930s Nazi constructions; it is treated as a historical site with informational exhibitions rather than a memorial glorifying the events.
What to See #
- Zeppelin Field: An open parade ground that includes the remaining grandstand structure used during the Nazi mass rallies; the site retains the stepped seating area and the central podium area.
- Congress Hall: A monumental, unfinished congress building from the 1930s that was intended to seat tens of thousands; much of the shell remains and one wing houses an exhibition facility.
- Documentation Center: A permanent museum and research centre located on the rally grounds that documents the history and ideology of the Nazi rallies and the site's role, opened as a dedicated exhibit space in the early 21st century.
