The Nazca lines are a large group of ancient geoglyphs etched into the arid coastal plain of southern Peru in the Ica Region, created by removing surface stones to reveal lighter subsoil. They are among the most extensive collections of geoglyphs in the world and are recognised for their size and preservation.

The site includes hundreds of straight lines, geometric shapes and figurative animals and plants; experts commonly cite on the order of several hundred individual figures alongside many long straight alignments that run for kilometres. The best views are from the air in small planes or from elevated observation platforms near the Pan-American Highway that provide close-up views of select figures.

Archaeological study attributes the works primarily to the Nazca culture and neighbouring groups, created between roughly 500 BCE and 500 CE by removing the dark surface stones to expose the pale ground beneath. The purpose of the lines is debated by researchers but interpretations include ritual, astronomical or hydrological functions.

The geoglyphs lie on the flat, dry Pampas between the towns of Nazca and Palpa in southern coastal Peru, in a region of low rainfall and sparse vegetation that aided their preservation.

  • Viewing methods: Small observation towers beside the Pan-American Highway and small-survey aircraft are the two main ways to view the geoglyphs, with aircraft offering the widest perspective.
  • Flight advice: Morning flights generally provide calmer air and better visibility for aerial views; book with licensed operators and expect short single-engine aircraft.

How to Get to Nazca lines #

Nazca is on the Panamericana Sur highway and is reached by long‑distance buses from Lima and Ica (several operators run daily services). Flights over the Nazca Lines depart from the small airport/airfield near Nazca town (tour operators operate the sightseeing flights). The viewing tower over the lines at the edge of town is a short walk from Nazca’s main square.

Tips for Visiting Nazca lines #

  • Take a morning flight from Nazca to view the lines when winds and thermal activity are typically lowest-pilots prefer early departures for smoother conditions and clearer views.
  • If you don't want to fly, use the observation towers on the Panamericana (near the town) for a cheap, legal vantage of a few geoglyphs; these towers are an alternative many visitors overlook.
  • Book your flight in advance and check operator safety records and plane capacity; flights are limited by aircraft size and popularity spikes during peak tourist months.

Best Time to Visit Nazca lines #

For the clearest aerial views of the Nazca Lines, plan during the dry season (May-September) when flight visibility is most reliable.

Dry season (best visibility)
May-September · 18-30°C
Clear skies and low humidity give the best aerial visibility of the lines; flight conditions are generally calmer and more reliable.
Wet/warmer season
December-March · 20-32°C
Occasional rains, haze or low clouds can reduce visibility and affect scenic flights; overall warmer but less consistent flying conditions.
