Naxos is the largest island of the Cyclades island group in the Aegean Sea, known for fertile agricultural land, marble quarries and a mix of classical and Venetian-era monuments. It serves as a transport and service hub for the central Cyclades and has been inhabited continuously since antiquity.

The most recognisable sights are the Portara, a large marble doorway from an unfinished ancient temple that frames the harbour, the Venetian Kastro in the island capital Chora, and long sandy beaches on the western and southern coasts. The interior is relatively green compared with many Cycladic islands, with traditional villages, small-scale farming and hiking routes up to the island’s upland areas.

Naxos was controlled at various times in antiquity and the medieval period, with noticeable Venetian influence between the 13th and 16th centuries when the island was part of the Duchy of the Archipelago. Modern tourism developed in the 20th century alongside continued local agriculture and marble production.

The island lies in the central Aegean Sea within the Cyclades, served by frequent ferries from Piraeus and other islands and by seasonal flights; it is a short ferry ride from neighbouring islands such as Paros.

  • Transport links: Ferry connections run from Piraeus and nearby Cycladic islands; the island also has a small airport with seasonal flights.
  • Beaches: Beaches such as Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna have long sandy stretches and are among the island's primary summer attractions.

What to See #

  • Portara (Temple doorway): The Portara, the massive marble doorway that is the surviving element of an unfinished temple to Apollo and a landmark on the harbour islet.
  • Chora (Naxos town): The island's main town with a Venetian-era castle (Kastro) and narrow streets, acting as the administrative and tourist centre.
  • Interior and Mount Zas: A fertile inland area featuring mountain villages and the island's highest peak, with traditional agriculture and hiking routes.
