National Park Thayatal

National Park Cross-border Austrian national park with riverine forests

Straddling the Austrian-Czech border along the Thaya, National Park Thayatal protects river gorges, mixed forests and limestone cliffs; hikers and naturalists visit for trails, river scenery and cross-border routes into Podyjí.

Main image

National Park Thayatal is a protected area in Lower Austria along the Thaya (Dyje) river at the Austria-Czech Republic border, notable for steep river gorges, mixed broadleaf forest and species-rich limestone slopes.

Trails and viewpoints run along the Thaya river gorge, offering close access to narrow valleys and wooded cliffs that support diverse flora and fauna. Hardegg, a small town with castle ruins on the Austrian side, provides popular outlooks and trailheads into the park.

The park’s compact scale and the proximity of the Czech Podyjí National Park make it appealing for day hikes, wildlife observation and short multi-day excursions that cross the border. Trails vary in difficulty but commonly follow river terraces and ridge crests.

The area was designated for protection to conserve its riverine gorges and temperate forests and to enable coordinated management with the adjacent Czech national park. Traditional land uses shaped the cultural landscape around villages such as Hardegg.

Located in Lower Austria along the Thaya/Dyje river on the border with the Czech Republic, the park sits in a largely rural, hilly landscape and is accessed from nearby towns including Hardegg.

  • Cross-border conservation: The park forms a cross-border protected area together with Podyjí National Park on the Czech side of the Thaya/Dyje river.

By car: from Vienna take the A22 north and follow signs to Hardegg/Thayatal (about 90-120 minutes). Public transport: regional trains to Retz or Gmünd and local buses to park entrances; check ÖBB and local bus timetables. Several trailheads are a short walk from village centres.

Tips for Visiting National Park Thayatal #
