National Museum of Slovenia

The National Museum of Slovenia in Ljubljana is the country’s principal national museum for archaeology, numismatics and cultural history. It holds long-term collections that document prehistory, antiquity and later historical periods within the Slovene lands.

Galleries present archaeological finds, coin and medal collections, and displays of ethnographic and applied arts material. Exhibits include objects from prehistoric settlements, Roman-era artefacts and material illustrating medieval and modern cultural history.

The museum was founded in the early 19th century and developed from civic and provincial collections into the national institution responsible for major archaeological and cultural-historical holdings. Over time its collections and research programmes expanded and were housed in historic buildings in Ljubljana.
