Nahuel Huapi Lake
Lake Patagonian lake encompassing national park and tourism hub
Nahuel Huapi Lake frames San Carlos de Bariloche and stretches through Andean foothills; visitors use it for boating, trout fishing, lakeside hiking and as a gateway to Nahuel Huapi National Park and nearby ski areas.
Nahuel Huapi Lake is a large glacial lake in northern Patagonia within Nahuel Huapi National Park, and it forms a central feature of the park’s mountain-lake landscape. The lake’s shoreline includes peninsulas, islands and forested slopes that draw visitors for boating, hiking and scenic drives.
Popular local highlights include boat trips from San Carlos de Bariloche to Victoria Island and the Quetrihué Peninsula, where the rare Arrayanes forest and coastal trails are major draws. The lake and surrounding park provide opportunities for water-based excursions, day hikes, lookout viewpoints and wildlife observation.
The lake basin was sculpted by Pleistocene glaciation and has long been central to regional settlement and tourism. Nahuel Huapi National Park protects the lake and its watershed while supporting recreational infrastructure centred on Bariloche.
Nahuel Huapi lies in the Andean foothills of northern Patagonia, with San Carlos de Bariloche located on its southern shore and serving as the main visitor gateway to the lake and national park.
