Mystery Play of Elche

The Mystery Play of Elche (Misteri d’Elx) is a medieval liturgical drama performed in Elche in the Valencian Community, centred on the Assumption of the Virgin. It is a staged religious drama kept alive by community traditions and performed in the city’s principal church.

Performances consist of sung and spoken parts using choral forces and soloists, presented in two main sections during an evening and the following feast day. The play is presented inside the Basilica of Santa María using the church’s choir and interior spaces and draws both local participants and visiting audiences.

Documentary and archival evidence trace the play’s medieval origins and its continuous performance tradition over many centuries, with periodic restorations of music and staging. The community of Elche has maintained the piece as part of local religious and civic life, adapting staging and support arrangements over time.

The play is performed inside the Basilica of Santa María in the city of Elche, which lies roughly 20 kilometres from the city of Alicante on Spain’s eastern Mediterranean coast.

• Annual schedule: Takes place each year on 14 and 15 August with most performances and rituals concentrated in the evening of the 14th and the feast day on the 15th - tickets are limited and sell out quickly.
