Mweelrea is a mountain massif on the west coast of County Mayo, Ireland, and its summit reaches 814 metres, making it the highest peak in the province of Connacht. The massif forms a steep coastal range with corries and ridgelines facing the Atlantic.
Popular hillwalking routes include ridge and horseshoe circuits that pass multiple summits and mountain lakes; routes are typically steep and can be exposed. The summit provides extensive views over Killary Harbour and the surrounding coastline on clear days.
The massif developed through glacial shaping and has long been used for sheep grazing and recreational hillwalking. Paths and marked routes have become established as the area has grown in popularity with walkers.
Mweelrea stands on the western seaboard of County Mayo, overlooking Killary Harbour and the Atlantic Ocean; the nearest towns for access and services include Louisburgh and Leenaun.

How to Get to Mweelrea #
Mweelrea is reached from County Mayo’s road network; the nearest major town is Westport. Drive from Westport roughly 40-50 km west toward Louisburgh/Delphi (allow about 45-75 minutes depending on exact start point and traffic) and park at the hillwalker car parks near the Delphi/Glencorrib area or the Lough Fee trailhead. From the roadhead the ascent is a mountain hike of several kilometres on marked/unmarked upland trails.

- Choose a clear summer day (June-September) and start very early to avoid boggy lower sections and afternoon weather changes common in the west of Ireland.
- Approach from the Delphi/Leenane side and follow established routes; allow 5-7 hours round trip depending on pace and conditions.
- Keep time for the summit panorama: on clear days the top offers sweeping views of Killary Harbour and the surrounding ranges, so plan your ascent to coincide with good visibility.
