Muttler
Mountain Prominent Samnaun Alps peak popular with hikers
High in the Samnaun Alps near the Austria-Switzerland border, Muttler attracts hikers and ski-mountaineers for alpine ridges and wide views over the Engadine and neighboring peaks.
Muttler is a mountain in the canton of Graubünden (Grisons) in eastern Switzerland and is the highest peak of the Samnaun Alps with an elevation of about 3,294 metres. It is a prominent, rocky summit used as a landmark in the border region with Austria.
The mountain is approached by alpine routes and scrambling ridges rather than by lift infrastructure; ascents require mountain experience and appropriate equipment. From the summit there are wide views across neighbouring mountain groups and the valleys below.
The peak has long been part of local alpine mountaineering routes and is accessed from valleys and villages in the Samnaun area. Over time climbing and shepherding have been the human activities associated with the slopes.
Muttler sits in eastern Switzerland near the village of Samnaun and close to the Austrian border, within the high Alpine landscape of Graubünden.
- Summit note: The summit reaches the highest point of the Samnaun Alps and is a notable objective for alpine hikers in eastern Switzerland.
Tips for Visiting Muttler #
- Aim to climb in stable summer conditions (July-September) when snow and ice are least likely on higher sections; always check local mountain-weather and route reports before setting out.
- Start very early to avoid the common afternoon thunderstorms in the Alps and to maximise visibility from the summit across the Samnaun and Engadin valleys.
- Use official trailheads and published route descriptions or a local alpine guide - ridges can be exposed and conditions change quickly, so follow marked paths and up-to-date alpine advice.
