Museum of the Ancient Agora
Museum Archaeological museum exhibiting artifacts from Athens' Ancient Agora
Compact museum next to Athens’ Ancient Agora, presenting pottery, sculptures and inscriptions recovered from the marketplace; visited by archaeology enthusiasts touring the Agora ruins.
The Museum of the Ancient Agora is the archaeological museum located within the Ancient Agora of Athens, housed in the reconstructed Stoa of Attalos. The stoa reconstruction was completed in the mid-20th century and the museum presents material excavated from the Agora.
Systematic excavations of the Ancient Agora were carried out by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens beginning in the 20th century; the modern museum was installed in the 20th-century reconstruction of the Stoa of Attalos to house those finds. The stoa itself is a modern reconstruction of an original Hellenistic building and was restored to provide exhibition space for the Agora material.
The museum sits within the Ancient Agora in central Athens, northwest of the Acropolis and within walking distance of Monastiraki and Thission metro stations.
- How to visit: Combine a visit with the surrounding Agora ruins and the nearby **Temple of Hephaestus**; the museum sits inside the Agora complex and is reached from Monastiraki/Thission on foot.
- Building and layout: The museum occupies a reconstructed Hellenistic stoa completed in the 1950s; the two-level layout places heavier architectural finds and sculptures on the lower level and smaller artifacts upstairs.
What to See #
- Stoa of Attalos: Housed in the reconstructed **Stoa of Attalos**, the museum occupies the long colonnaded building in the Ancient Agora and uses both ground and upper galleries to display finds from the site.
- Collections: The collection comprises archaeological finds from the Ancient Agora spanning roughly the 7th century BC through the Roman period, including pottery, inscriptions, sculpture and metalwork recovered during systematic excavations.
