Museum Marseille museum exploring Mediterranean cultures and heritage
Set at the mouth of the Old Port, MuCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations) explores Mediterranean history and culture with exhibitions linking sea, trade and migration. Visitors cross the footbridge to Fort Saint-Jean and use harbourfront viewpoints.
The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MuCEM) in Marseille is a national museum dedicated to Mediterranean culture and history, opened in 2013. It combines a modern exhibition building with the restored Fort Saint-Jean at the entrance to the Old Port.
Permanent and temporary exhibitions explore Mediterranean societies, cultural exchanges and everyday life across the region, using objects, media and installations. The juxtaposition of the contemporary J4 cube building and the historic Fort Saint-Jean creates dramatic views over the harbour and provides outdoor terraces and pathways. The site is also used for cultural programming, talks and festivals tied to Mediterranean themes.
MuCEM was developed as part of Marseille’s tenure as European Capital of Culture in 2013 and involved the construction of a new museum building and the restoration of Fort Saint-Jean. The project linked contemporary museum design with the city’s maritime heritage.
Positioned at the entrance to Marseille’s Old Port, the museum stands on a pier-like site where the museum building meets Fort Saint-Jean, with pedestrian connections into the historic port area and easy access from the city centre.
