Museu do Ipiranga

Museu do Ipiranga, also known as the Museu Paulista, is a historic museum in São Paulo dedicated to Brazilian history, especially the period around independence. The monumental neo-Renaissance palace was built in the late 19th century as a commemorative museum and houses historical artefacts and artworks.

Collections emphasise the late colonial and imperial periods of Brazil, with large-scale historical paintings, furniture, documents and objects linked to national independence. The museum’s displays combine art and historical material to illustrate 19th-century political and social life.

The museum was created in the late 19th century as part of centennial commemorations of independence and later became part of the University of São Paulo’s heritage holdings, undergoing restoration and conservation campaigns in recent decades. Its building and grounds are treated as both a museum complex and a historic landmark.

The museum stands within Parque da Independência in the Ipiranga district, south of central São Paulo, and is commonly visited together with the surrounding park and memorial sites.
