The Musée Picasso in Paris is a museum dedicated to the works and archives of Pablo Picasso, housed in the 17th-century Hôtel Salé in the Marais quarter. The museum holds one of the major public collections of Picasso’s paintings, sculptures, ceramics and archival material.
Galleries display paintings, sculptures, ceramics and drawings spanning Picasso’s career alongside documents and photographs from his archive. Rotating exhibitions and loans supplement the permanent holdings, and displays are arranged across period rooms and refurbished gallery spaces.
The French state acquired a significant Picasso collection in the 20th century, and the Musée Picasso was established at the Hôtel Salé, opening to the public in the 1980s; the museum underwent a major renovation and reopened in 2014. The collection and archives were built from donations, purchases and bequests over decades.
Set in the Marais in Paris’s 3rd arrondissement, the museum sits within walking distance of Place des Vosges and other central attractions, and is well served by Paris public transport.
- Timed tickets recommended: Timed-entry tickets are advised, especially at weekends, as visitor numbers are limited and queues form in the Marais district.
- 2014 renovation: The museum reopened after a comprehensive renovation in 2014 that expanded exhibition and conservation space.

Musée Picasso is in the Marais (Hôtel Salé), central Paris. The quickest public-transit access is Metro Line 1 to Saint‑Paul (Le Marais) - the museum is a 2-5 minute walk from that station. Bastille (Lines 1, 5, 8) and Hôtel de Ville (Line 1) are also within a 10-15 minute walk.
Driving in Le Marais is not recommended because parking is limited; use metro or bus services to reach the museum.
Tips for Visiting Musée Picasso #
- Buy a timed-entry ticket online and aim for the first entry slot or a late-afternoon visit to avoid long queues in the narrow rooms of the Hôtel Salé, where crowding makes it hard to view drawings and smaller works.
- Don't rush past the upstairs rooms and temporary exhibition spaces-these quieter areas often hold works on paper and studies that are easy to miss but important for understanding Picasso's process.
Best Time to Visit Musée Picasso #
Go on a weekday morning in spring or autumn to avoid the heaviest tourist crowds and long lines.
