Musée de Montmartre

The Musée de Montmartre sits in the Montmartre district of Paris and is dedicated to the artists and social life of that neighbourhood during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It occupies a cluster of historic houses on Rue Cortot and preserves associated gardens and studio spaces.

Exhibits present paintings, posters, drawings and archival material documenting the lives and work of artists linked to Montmartre, including displays about Renoir, Utrillo and other painters. The museum complex includes the restored garden commonly known as the Renoir Garden, plus period studio rooms and rotating temporary exhibitions.

The buildings that house the museum date from the 17th and 18th centuries and were home to several artists’ studios and cabarets associated with Montmartre’s bohemian era. Over the 20th century the site was converted into a museum to preserve the district’s artistic heritage.

Located in northern Paris on the hill of Montmartre, the museum is within walking distance of the Place du Tertre and the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, served by several Metro lines.
