Park Coastal national park with beaches and abundant kangaroos
A New South Wales coastal park with beaches, rocky headlands and campgrounds; tourists come for surfing, snorkeling, coastal walks and regular sightings of eastern grey kangaroos near Pebbly Beach.
Murramarang National Park is a protected coastal park on the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia, protecting beaches, headlands and coastal forest. It is valued for its marine and coastal habitats and accessible shorelines.
Beaches, rocky headlands and lagoons are the park’s main attractions, with popular sites including Pebbly Beach and Depot Beach. The park supports marine recreation, fishing from headlands, swimming where conditions allow and short coastal walks; numerous lookout points provide views of the Pacific Ocean.
The park is managed by the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service and conserves a mix of dry sclerophyll forest, heath and coastal dune vegetation. It is also noted for coastal wildlife, including seabirds, reptiles and the regionally familiar eastern grey kangaroo.
Murramarang lies along the NSW South Coast roughly 200-250 kilometres south of Sydney, with nearest towns such as Bawley Point and Moruya providing local access points; the park occupies a stretch of coastline with headlands and small offshore islands.
- Kangaroos on the beach: Wild eastern grey kangaroos regularly come down to the shoreline at Pebbly Beach, creating one of the park's most photographed sights.
- Camping and walking: The park contains several coastal campgrounds and short walking tracks that provide access to beaches, headlands and picnic areas; seasonal conditions can affect beach access.
What to See #
- Pebbly Beach: Pebbly Beach - a sheltered sandy bay within the park known for a resident population of eastern grey kangaroos that are often seen on the sand and near the campground.
- Depot Beach: Depot Beach - a larger beach with a campground, picnic facilities and walking tracks, commonly used as a base for exploring the park's coastline.
How to Get to Murramarang National Park #
Murramarang National Park is on the NSW South Coast (around the Kioloa/Bawley Point/Depot Beach area). By car from Sydney, follow the Princes Highway/A1 south toward Batemans Bay, then turn off to the coastal roads serving Bawley Point and Kioloa; the drive is roughly 3 hours (around 200-250 km) depending on route and traffic. There is ample parking at main park access points such as Depot Beach picnic/campground car parks.
Within the park beaches, lookouts and tracks are reached on foot from the car parks - short walks from parking areas take you to beaches and coastal walking tracks. Public bus services to the small coastal villages are limited, so driving is the most practical way to visit.
Tips for Visiting Murramarang National Park #
- Head to Pebbly Beach at dawn or dusk for reliable sightings of kangaroos that often graze near the sand at those times.
- Use Depot Beach as the park's main access point - it has the campground, picnic facilities and the primary car park, and campsites should be booked in advance during peak season.
- Take the marked coastal walks between the beaches and headlands (Pebbly, Bawley Point/Depot area) rather than cutting inland to enjoy uninterrupted sea views and tidepool spotting.
