Murcia Cathedral

Murcia Cathedral (Cathedral Church of Saint Mary) is the Roman Catholic cathedral in the city of Murcia, southeastern Spain, and the seat of the Diocese of Cartagena. The building was begun in the late 14th century and exhibits a mixture of Gothic structure with later Renaissance and Baroque additions.

Notable features include an ornate Baroque main façade that faces the principal city square and a tall bell tower that dominates the skyline. Interior chapels, a Gothic choir and later decorative programs reflect centuries of construction and artistic change.

The cathedral stands on the site of a former mosque and its layered architecture documents the city’s religious and civic history through the late medieval and early modern periods. It remains an active cathedral and a central landmark in Murcia’s historic centre.
