Murbach Abbey

Murbach Abbey is the site of a former Benedictine monastery in the Sundgau area of Grand Est in eastern France, notable for its surviving Romanesque church fabric. The abbey was an important medieval religious institution and its church ruins remain a dominant landmark in the village of Murbach.

The remains include substantial masonry and two prominent Romanesque towers from the medieval abbey church, together with foundations and fragments of adjacent monastic buildings. These ruins demonstrate the scale and Romanesque character of the ecclesiastical complex that once stood there.

The abbey grew in influence during the Middle Ages and acted as a regional religious and economic center before being suppressed and largely dismantled during the revolutionary period at the end of the 18th century. Since then the site has been a focus for local history and heritage interpretation.

Murbach lies in the valley at the western foothills of the Vosges in the Haut-Rhin department, within easy reach of the towns of Guebwiller and Munster.
